The NV Grand Cru TerroirEscence Rosé is a blend of Pinot Noir (70%) and Chardonnay (30%) from Verzy and Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims. The sample I tasted in July 2018 was based on reserve wines from a solera and the 2010 vintage; it was bottled in May 2011 and disgorged in July 2016 with less than six grams of dosage. Partially aged in small oak barrels (no malolactic fermentation), the salmon colored wine opens with a deep, intense, slightly oxidative and toasty, matured and vinous bouquet of small red fruits, pralines and brioche. On the palate, the wine is elegant, intense, fresh and well structured, revealing a long, firm, delicate finish with fresh red strawberry flavors in the clear, clean and persistently mineral aftertaste. My bottle was impressive but, unfortunately, a bit drying in the finish, so it probably is not the very best example. The white TerroirEscence, however, was much clearer and was truly shining. Dosed as Extra Brut.

70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay from Verzy and Verzenay. Based on 2010 and disgorged July 2016 with a dosage of less than 6 g/l. Pale tomato pink in a clear bottle. Real development on the nose. Amazing amount of fruit considering this has such a low dosage! Acidity is doubtless lower than in its white stablemates. Lots of fun and evolution. (JR)

Disgorged July 2014. Blend of grand cru plots in Verzy and Verzenay. 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay based on the 2009 vintage. Deep rose pink. Steady mousse. Flirtatious lift on the nose with much more character than most pink champagnes – even a suggestion of rose petals scents – but then a bone-dry finish. The juice is virtually sucked out of the palate! This is a rosé to drink with food, I think. Very austere finish indeed. (JR)
