Pure, fresh and crystalline, with a dash of lemon perfume, sandstone flavors and good concentration starts the 2014 Riesling Heiligenstein Lyra 1ÖTW on the nose. Medium-bodied but dense and very mineral, this is a pure, finesse-full and refreshing Heiligenstein with a lot of tension, structure and salt. This is one of the highlights of this vintage along the Danube. Very long, intense and complex, but always fresh and vibrant.

Iris and lemon grass delightfully rise from the glass. Predictably fuller (at around 13% alcohol) than its “regular” counterpart, one can’t really say that this tastes obviously riper. But it preserves a similarly mouthwatering, crustacean combination of saline, alkaline and iodine notes, here tending toward the sweetness of fresh sea scallops. Succulent white peach saturates a silken midpalate, while the gripping, tingling peach-kernel- and walnut-tinged finish gives the salivary glands a real workout.
Smells a little riper than his Heiligenstein Alte Reben, more clementine than lemon – does the lyre training allow more sun to reach the vine? Slightly brasher than the Alte Reben, more fullness on the mid palate and perhaps less elegance overall. Totally mouth-watering finish but not out of balance. (JH)
