Tasting notes
The 2014 Riesling Smaragd Weissenkirchner Achleithen opens enormously deep and mineral on the nose, with citrus flavors. This is a full-bodied, intense, very complex and mineral Riesling with an endless finish and great aging potential. This wine is extremely pure and structured at the moment, offering nothing but citrus flavors, but this is my favorite Riesling of the Wachau in 2015.

Bittersweet, musky perfumes of iris and narcissus well up from the glass, then persist on a palate otherwise dominated by fresh lime and apple. A tingling sense of crystalline mineral impingement, along with piquancy of nut oils, peach kernel and spruce resin, informs the long, penetratingly bright finish. Pichler has let this ferment to uncompromising dryness, clearly unafraid of any youthful tendency toward austerity.
