Tasting notes
The 2018 La Grande Dame is just as impressive as it was last year. The focus on northern and northeastern sites in Verzy and Verzenay yields a Grande Dame that impresses with notable tension and cut. Lemon peel, white flowers, chalk, mint and slate race across the palate. There's gorgeous mineral-drenched drive here. Impeccable.

Full bottle 1,895 g. 90% Pinot Noir, 10% Chardonnay. Not many technical details given. Remarkably fine mousse. Explosive – fireworks texture. Smoky Pinot perfume and rather rich underneath. Baked-apple flavours and at the moment just a tiny bit of astringency on the end. Richer than any single-estate champagne I can think of but impressively weighty! (JR)
The 2018 La Grande Dame is a very pretty wine that shows the contemporary style that is prevalent here these days. Floral overtones lift a core of citrus fruit, while marzipan, anise, mint, dried pear and spice open with a bit of coaxing. The 2018 is a delicate Grand Dame, as most Champagnes are in a vintage in which yields were exceptionally high. I especially admire the finesse here. Disgorged: September 2024.
