Saturated ruby-red. Wild black raspberry, boysenberry and a whiff of cinders on the nose; very ripe but not yet expressive. Fat, sweet and round on entry, then densely packed in the mid-palate, with purple fruit and dark plum flavors accented by a note of black pepper. Finishes quite backward, with fine-grained, spicy tannins avoiding dryness.

Good deep red. Less exuberant and expressive today than the Bressandes, showing aromas of smoky minerality, crushed stone, leather and meat. Juicy, tight and stony; very precise and firmly built but extremely backward and unevolved. Best today on the sappy, precise, long finish, which really perfumes the palate.
The 2013 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru is tight-lipped on the nose, but there is plenty of ripe dark cherry and cassis fruit waiting to spring forth. There is fine clarity and focus here. The palate is medium-bodied and much spicier than the Corton Bressandes: black pepper, cloves and a touch of thyme and here it fans out beautifully on the finish. What a gorgeous Clos du Roi in the making!
