Tasting notes
The 2017 Riesling vom Stein Smaragd opens with a floral overtone alongside dried peach and waxy apple. The palate has immediate dimension, filling the mind with its cloud-like presence and smoothing itself like an airy blanket across the palate, all anchored in a sense of stoniness and fine, pure dried lemon peel. This is all smoothness and balm-like gentleness. A Riesling of texture, this finishes smooth, bone-dry, salty and waxy. (Bone-dry)

The Mautern 2017 Riesling Ried Vom Stein Smaragd offers a pure, refined and finely oxidative bouquet of bright, ripe fruits intermingled with smoky and saline terroir notes as well as some delicate oak. Round and intense on the palate, with fine, playful and persistently saline acidity, this is a full-bodied, dense and very elegant Riesling with striking intensity and finesse. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in October 2022.
Mautern. Apricot and white flowers, along with the beginning suggestions of maturity. Spicy, supple delights and an elegant momentum. Savoury, warm spice that crescendos into its final rich and layered orchestral whole. This is a Riesling as only the Wachau can do – power, story, spice and stone. The luxury of time and richness of legend. (PS)
