I found both Montirius reds to be outstanding. The 2005 Vacqueyras Garrigues comes from the Plateau des Garrigues behind the village and is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. Completely destemmed and aged all in tank (this estate never uses any oak whatsoever), it gives up beautiful notes of garrigue, blackcurrants, licorice and toasted spice to go with a rounded, supple, medium to full-bodied profile on the palate. It’s drinking at point and is a classic Vacqueyras to enjoy over the coming couple of years.

Dark savoury fruit, restrained but intense. Dry and firm, with plenty of spice and excellent backbone of dark peppery fruit. Long and deep. See recent wine of the week. (JH)

Bright ruby. Spicy red berry aromas display an elegant, poised character, with subtle licorice and herb qualities adding complexity. Precise, sharply defined strawberry and cherry flavors offer pleasing bitterness, with gentle tannins carrying through the finish. Nothing extroverted here.
