Yes, the 2009 Châteauneuf du Pape A la Gloire de Mon Grand-Père is bricking a bit, and the aromas have started to turn toward decay and sous-bois, but on the palate, this full-bodied, richly tannic effort still has pleasure to give, delivering ripe cherries, hints of dried fruit and a long, chewy, salted-licorice finish.

Ruby-red. Spicy red fruits on the nose and palate. Nicely supple and deep, turning spicier with air and picking up exotic floral pastille and star anise qualities that carry through a very long, juicy finish. Tannins make a late appearance and add shape but don't distract from the plush, clinging fruit.

Quite closed and subdued at the time of tasting, the 2009 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape A la Gloire de mon Grand-Père is a blend of 98% Grenache and 2% Cinsault and Clairette. Aged 20% in cement tanks, 60% in foudre, and 20% in demi-muid, it possesses a moderately intense bouquet of kirsch and wild strawberry compote, subtle garrigue, spice, and wet stone. Filling in and requiring a fair chunk of air to show well (I set this bottle aside and went back to it at the end of the day), this medium-bodied Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a light, silky texture, solid richness to the fruit (but not as much depth as I’d like to see), and loads of fine tannin on the finish. Overall, certainly outstanding, and it should benefit from short to mid-term cellaring and have upwards of 10-12 years of longevity.
