Good bright medium red. Complex soil-driven perfume of spicy red berries, flowers, minerals and earth. A broad, supple, slightly exotic fruit bomb in the mouth, with noteworthy intensity to its red cherry and raspberry flavors. This deceptively accessible wine finishes with a firm tannic spine.

The 2010 Morey St. Denis Les Millandes is a big, broad-shouldered wine graced with tremendous depth in its fruit. Dark cherries, menthol, spices and new leather are some of the many notes that are woven into the fabric of this beautifully balanced wine. Firm tannins support the fruit all the way through to the virile, intense finish. This is a great showing. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030. Christian Serafin doesn’t say a lot, at least not verbally. The wines speak for him eloquently though. Serafin has turned out a lovely set of 2010s. I give the edge to 2009 for consistency across his range, but the top wines here are undoubtedly exciting. They will thrill readers who appreciated transparent, weightless Burgundies. Yields were down 20-30% on average, which is on the lower end of the spectrum within the context of the year. Serafin planned to bottle his 2010s between February and April 2012. Importer: Peter Weygandt, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800

Not 100% fresh on the nose. Tough and chewy on the palate. Very dry on the end. (JR)

(finished its malo very late, after the 2011 harvest): Good bright dark red. Very dark aromas of black raspberry, licorice and game. Rich, sweet and seamless but less pliant and evolved than the Fontenys. Classically structured wine with a firmly tannic finish.
