I found none of the austerity or rusticity in this bottle of 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes that I found last year, yet the tannin is certainly present, but that’s always the case with this cuvee. A blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvedre aged in tank and stainless steel, it has lots of blackberry, black cherry, seaweed, crushed rock and garrigue to go with a medium to full-bodied, elegant and seamless style on the palate. I suspect the tannin will always be present here, but it has solid depth of fruit and will certainly evolve nicely through 2022.

Showing the classic Grenache profile that’s common with this cuvee, the 2006 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is in the early stages of maturity and is drinking beautifully. The wine shows loads of garrigue, crushed rock, licorice, and roasted meat qualities on the nose, with an impressively constructed palate that, while round and supple, shows plenty of length and structure. While I wouldn’t hesitate to start drinking these, they should ideally be given another 2-3 years in the cellar, and a drink window out to 2020 seems reasonable.

Bright ruby. Alluring scents of raspberry, sandalwood, tea rose and smoky minerals. Fleshy red berry flavors are brightened by blood orange and tangy minerals, picking up floral pastille and garrigue nuances with air. The licorice note repeats on the impressively sweet, clinging finish. This is awfully sexy.

70% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre. Lighter crimson than most. Juicy unadorned local herby fruit on the nose. Not absolutely obviously special cuvée quality though very attractive wine. Hope a regular bottling was not impoverished for this….? (JR)
