Lemon, grapefruit, white currant and apple are accented with invigoratingly piquant fruit seed, stinging nettle, crunchy currant seed and incisive white pepper, for a performance that really wakes up the palate. The sense of austerity and severity here is allied to impressive focus, primary juiciness and sheer grip. There is not the textural richness or the low-toned, dark mineral shadings that I usually associate with Kellerberg.

The 2015 Dürnsteiner Riesling Ried Kellerberg Smaragd opens cool and intense, with stony and flinty aromas of crushed stones. Full-bodied and very elegant this is a pure and rather crystalline, lingering salty and tension-filled wine with grip and personality. An outstanding Riesling, lean but intense and dense.
