Slightly less evolved than the classic cuvée, the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Val de Dieu is nevertheless similar in quality. Made from 45% Syrah, 44% Grenache and the balance Mourvèdre, it gives up pretty notes of black raspberries, currants, crushed flowers and garrigue. These give way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant, and fresh Chateauneuf du Pape that has the hallmark sexiness and texture that’s the hallmark of the estate. It’s a prime candidate for drinking over the coming 4-5 years.

The 2006 Château de Vaudieu Châteauneuf-du-Pape Val de Dieu is a blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre and is aged in a combination of demi-muid (Syrah/Mourvèdre) and concrete tank (Grenache.) The wine is very rich, showing meaty blackberry and black cherry fruit that’s wrapped around a tightly wound core of graphite, licorice, and garrigue. Superbly textured and medium to full bodied, this has serious, age worthy structure, concentrated fruit and a long finish. Give bottles another 2 to 3 years and then drink over the following 15.

Saturated ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of black raspberry, cherry, potpourri and Asian spices. Alluringly sweet, with zesty minerals adding spine to fresh red and dark berry flavors. A sneaky vanilla note gains strength on the finish, which is strikingly spicy and long. I underestimated this sexy wine last year.

Exceptionally deep crimson. Concentrated meaty, savoury nose with a lovely thread of liquorice and real juice and energy. Very Châteauneuf – lovely balance and already readable. A worthwhile special cuvée. Sandy soils again, 6% Grenache with equal parts of Syrah and Mourvedre. (JR)
