Very pale crimson. Well-integrated nose that's not that obviously Barolo. Extremely fresh and ferny. Discreet, sweet, and somehow rather well mannered and straight-backed. (JR)

The 2011 Barolo Brunate presents an extra layer of darkness, richness and aromatic intensity that sets it apart from Mario Marengo's other wines. A portion of this vineyard site was previously rented to Elio Altare, but that contract has expired and the fruit is now being used to increase production of this beautiful wine. This wine is busting with a clean and polished persona, and a sheer sense of energy and fruitiness. It should stand up to long cellar-aging.

Just mid ruby with orange-tinged rim. Very backward yet fine and with a brooding richness to it. Top notes of tea leaves. Very tightly woven palate with lively acidity and muscular tannins demanding all the attention for the moment. Complex, but holding back on the finish. Elegant palate weight. Very embryonic, something for the future. (WS)

The 2011 Barolo Brunate is dark, powerful and muscular in style, quite a contrast to the decidedly more feminine Bricco Viole. Some of the personality of Brunate appears to be covered by the richness of the vintage, yet there is plenty to like here as well. Dark plum, menthol, leather and cedar are some of the notes that wrap around the pliant, inviting finish. This is another 2011 that will drink well right out of the gate.
