The 2005 Persia is less charming, more structured and tannic, a bigger wine, but for my own personal taste, I prefer the 2006. Fondreche is the reference point for what can be done in the Cotes du Ventoux. This is a source of sensational wines that still sell for incredibly fair prices, and virtually every one of these selections proves that you don’t have to drink luxury-priced Bordeaux, Burgundy, or Napa Cabernets to experience the multiple joys of wine. Extremely dark. Spice and ambition just leap out of the glass! Not to mention new oak but lots of sweetness and a very mellow texture. This should be a crowd pleaser and more integrated than I remember the 2004 at this stage. Sweet but not too tough on the finish. Good value. (JR)
