I reviewed the 2006s last year at my ten-year retrospective tasting, but they showed much better across the board on this occasion. Looking first at the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape les Hautes Brusquières Cuvee Spéciale, it has first rate aromatics of ripe cherries, black licorice and garrigue in its full-bodied, pure and polished style. This cuvee always seems to have the most mid-palate depth of the three special cuvees, and it’s no exception in 2006. This 2006 is certainly in its window of maturity, but it should evolve nicely through 2024.

Vivid ruby. Lively strawberry and raspberry aromas are complicated by lavender and minerals. Fresh, sharply defined red berry flavors stain the palate, giving no hint of fat or excess weight. Impressively elegant wine with outstanding finishing clarity, lift and persistence.

60% Grenache, 40% Syrah. Rather muted nose – not the most obvious special cuvée but very ripe juicy concentrated fruits on the nose. A bit astringent on the finish without enough fruit weight in the middle. A bit opportunistic? (JR)

Deep ruby. Exotically perfumed aromas of spicy red and dark berries complicated by incense and garrigue Nicely balanced raspberry and cassis flavors are enlivened by baking spices and tangy minerality. This elegant wine finishes sweet and long.
