Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Chanson's 2014 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru les Chenevottes was showing some reduction at first, but there is plenty of fruit behind it. It's not quite as clean as the best Chassagne-Montrachet and has a tang of mothballs. The palate is balanced with a waxy-textured opening and notes of apricot and Golden Delicious apples that lead to a straightforward, lightly spiced finish that tapers prematurely. This will be an earlier drinking Chassagne-Montrachet.

Fermented partly in tank and partly in used 350-litre oak. Intense, deep aroma, almost a little honeyed. Lots here – quince, green fruit, mealy notes and a touch of orangey citrus. Then more savoury on the palate. Deep and satisfying and still finely fresh and long with a cedary aftertaste. (JH)
