The 2023 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse is quite elegant this year, mingling aromas of cherries with notions of spices, rose petals and orange zest in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and pure, it's lively and mouthwatering. Biodynamic trials are ongoing in this clay-rich walled monopole.

The 2023 Beaune Clos de la Mousse 1er Cru is one of the underrated cuvées amongst Bouchard Père's range. The impressively delineated bouquet reveals darker fruit with a more marine influence. The palate is well balanced, with the 30-40% whole cluster imparting noticeable pepperiness that shapes the finish. This is a more challenging Beaune in some ways—less immediate than Les Teurons, but more rewarding, especially in the longer term.

This is really pretty, with exceptional balance, stylish. After a medium deep purple colour, the bouquet is beautifully balanced. This was the first red vineyard to be farmed biodynamically from 2021, in partnership with the white Clos St-Landry. The clay has become much more granular since, Frédéric notes. The precision and texture are really fine. Given the joy provided by a 1923 Clos de la Mousse drunk in November, I could perhaps push out the drinking dates of the 2023 a little further….
