Tasting notes
From two sites: 75% from the vineyard next to Meerlust, where the soils are a mix of granite, clay and gravel and 25% from the Polkadraai Hills (Blue Gum Grove – Carinus), on decomposed granite. 40% aged in concrete and 60% in 500-litre barrels. Crisp wine with the aroma of pencil shavings. Fine and truly varietal but not yet ready. (JR)

The 2023 Breton is pure Cabernet Franc from Polkadraai with 25% whole bunch, matured 40% in concrete and the rest in used barrels. It has quite an austere nose that demands coaxing, its granitic soils seeming to percolate through the red fruit. Fresh and vibrant, the palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, chalky tannins and a touch of graphite on the finish. This is what you might call a Loire doppelgänger.
