Score 98/100 · Drink 2025-2035, Jeb Dunnuck, Jul 2025

A wine of tremendous concentration and gastronomic invitation, the 2020 Macan has a small 3% addition of Graciano and is aged in French oak only for 18-20 months. The vintage was warm, lending a concentration of firm, age-worthy tannins to its striking beauty and powerfully elegant core. Aromatic in rose petal and dark chocolate, it’s lengthy on the medium-bodied palate and balanced by underlying acidity, intended to show an evolution and departure in style, more finessed and structured, velvety and voluminous, but essential in its elegance and grace. Drink now through 2035.

The 2020 Macán includes new plots and Garnacha and Graciano grapes, and they harvested a little earlier. They select their best plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, and the grapes were cooled down for 24 hours before fermenting in oak vats with part of autochthonous yeasts. It matured 50% in new French oak barrels and 4,000-liter oak foudres for 16 months. The bottles are kept for three years before they're released. There were 98,835 bottles, 3,557 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in August 2022.

100% Tempranillo. Vines an average of 40 years old. 100 hectares on the highest terraces far from the Ebro in San Vicente, Labastida, Ábalos, Navaridas and Elvillar. Limestone soils with a sandy clay texture and a greater presence of gravel. After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic conversion took place in barrels and tanks. Aged for 16 months in French oak foudres (one-third) and barrels (two-thirds). Subsequent ageing of 28 months in the bottle. This is the vintage of the COVID-19 pandemic, which means that it was a very complex vintage logistically. But 2020 was a very rainy year in September, so guaranteeing the health of the grapes was an added challenge. Production: 98,835 bottles, 3,557 magnums, 119 double magnums, 31 Imperials and 5 Salmanazars. Cedar, clove and nutmeg melt over a fruity undertone. Chalky tannins and a very fine palate. It is classicism well understood because the barrel is in the foreground but does not overpower it. Smooth and silky on the palate. It is a wine that has not yet produced any tertiary aromas/flavours, so its potential for evolution is very high. A serious wine with that fruit in the background. It is a lighter vintage than Macán's usual trend, but it is very well defined. (FC)
