A much smaller production cuvée that's deep ruby-hued, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is 100% Grenache aged in foudre and offers sweet red and black cherries, sappy garrigue, flowers, and ample Provençal spice. It's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, graceful mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This brilliant wine can be drunk any time over the coming 20-25 years, and it's a magical wine in the vintage that doesn't get much better. Drink 2025-2048. One of the benchmark estates in all of France, Domaine de Marcoux is run today by the talented Sophie Armenier and her son Vincent, who is increasingly active in the vineyard. Sophie's sister Catherine recently retired, and the estate farms 18 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, eight hectares in Lirac, and just over two hectares of Côtes du Rhône. The estate is located just outside the northern edge of the appellation, with vines primarily in the south (Grandes Serres, Les Plagnes, and Les Galimardes), northwest (Beaurenard, Les Pradel, Maucoil, and L'Arnesque), and in the center (Les Esqueirons, Les Bosquets, and Charbonnière). The classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape is 80% Grenache with 10% Mourvèdre, 7% Syrah, and 3% Cinsault, destemmed and aged 18 months in 75% concrete with 20% large wooden vats and 5% old barrels. The Vieilles Vignes is 100% Grenache aged in foudre from Charbonnière and Esqueirons (Galimardes was removed starting in 2019), and it's one of the world's most profound wines. All of the estates chasing the new "elegant" style could learn something from tasting more Marcoux, an estate that has always produced sensationally pure, seamless, and elegant wines with richness, depth, texture, and character. The whites are also brilliant and increasingly up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. As I've said before, there are few wines I'd rather have in my cellar or on the table.

The 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is exquisite, bursting with a beautifully perfumed bouquet of peonies, rose petals, dark berries and exotic spices. Medium- to full-bodied, supple and layered, it delivers a fleshy, unctuous core of fruit enlivened by bright acids and framed by powdery, velvety tannins. Complete and harmonious, it concludes with a long, ethereal and perfumed finish. This pure Grenache Noir is a standout in what is a remarkably consistent 2023 portfolio from the estate.

One of the sleepers of the vintage, the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes needs ample time to open up in the glass. Blending old-vine Grenache from the usual Charbonnières and Les Esquirons lieux-dits, it gradually unlocks cooked strawberry, licorice and leafy tones. Peppery accents provide more complexity. Full-bodied, concentrated and dense, the 2023 Vieilles Vignes is loaded with potential—it just doesn’t want to reveal it on this day. This signs off with superb freshness on the long, focused finish.

100% Grenache, aged 100% in foudre. Certified organic. Tasted blind. Quite shy but has some very pretty blue fruits on the nose. The palate is firm and has a dense, tightly wound palate at the moment. There is some good energy and the blue fruits come through on the finish as well. Harmonious and together, but very introverted. (AC)
