The 2019 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is very reduced on the nose, snuffing out its sense of place and terroir, yet somehow, there remains some delineation and energy. The palate is rich and honeyed, toasty even, with low acidity and some alcohol toward the finish. It comes across like an also-ran Australian Chardonnay. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is the most concentrated, muscular wine in the range, unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, hazelnuts, honeycomb, wheat toast and spices. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's rich and textural, with huge depth at the core, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. This is a sumptuous, broad-shouldered Bienvenues that's built to age.

The 2019 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from the six rows owned by the Domaine that yielded one used 456-litre barrel. I had to shake off a bit of reduction on the nose, unfolding to reveal entrancing lemon thyme, peach skin and crushed rock aromas. The palate is very smooth on the entry, intense and voluminous in the mouth. Slightly creamy in texture it offers notes of almond, hazelnut and a touch of stem ginger towards the finish as it fans out as a Grand Cru is duty-bound to do. Superb.
