Tasting notes
The Boekenhoutskloof 2023 Swartland Syrah is made with a considerable proportion of whole-cluster fruit, adding depth, aromatic complexity and extra richness to the wine’s naturally supple texture. It shows a distinctly Mediterranean sense of density and volume, with aromas of blackberry layered with spice and cracked white pepper. Sourced from Swartland, where dry-farmed bush vines grow on iron-rich granite and shale under warm days and cooling evening breezes, the wine finishes with firm tannic grip that frames its generous core.

The 2023 Syrah comes from Swartland as usual, 60% whole bunch and aged for 18 months, 90% in Stockinger foudres and the rest in demi-muids. This has a perfumed nose with blueberry and black cherry scents, touches of pressed violet and peony emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Lovely balance, a tad more savoury than previous vintages with a ferrous/dried blood finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine.
