Tasting notes
A blend of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the Vilafonté 2023 Paarl Series M, distinguished by its pebble-textured front label, opens with an inky, almost glossy depth in the glass. Compared to Series C, it leans toward refinement and nuance, offering a seamless and polished profile. Layers of dark plum, black cherry and mulberry are intricately woven with sweet spice and subtle earthy undertones. The wine shows a smooth, flowing texture with fine-grained tannins and a lifted mineral edge that reflects the ancient soils of Paarl. Despite the challenges of the rainy vintage, this is a poised and elegant interpretation.

The 2023 Series M saw 14 days on the skins and aged for 22 months in 25% new French oak. This is beautifully defined on the nose with very pure red fruit, the oak seamlessly integrated. Quite Saint-Émilion-like. The palate is medium-bodied with a vivacious ripe entry, red plum and blackcurrant fruit, hints of white pepper emerging with time, gentle grip on the finish. Very composed and persistent, this is a classy Series M that should age with style.
