Carignan, Syrah. Open-knit, expressive nose where the oak spice and rich fruit combines beautifully. Nuanced, perfumed and rich with powerful cocoa and earthy notes. Really delicious and lengthy, with a tarry savoury finish. (RH)

Hundred-year-old Carignan vines form the base of this cuvée, one of Gerard Bertrand's flagships. The rest of the 2015 Corbieres Boutenac la Forge is Syrah; both are aged a year in barriques. Pencil shavings and crushed stone aromas set the stage for this garrigue-inflected blend, which folds in notes of green peppercorns, red berries and cherries, and hints of rosemary. It's full-bodied but already approachable, with silky tannins and a long, elegant finish.
