Score 96/100 · Drink 2015-2018, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, Apr 2015

The Flash Gordon comic strip was first published in the United States, while the Japanese company Fuji Photo Film was established. We're talking about 1934. Shirley MacLaine, Leonard Cohen, Ralph Nader and Brigitte Bardot were born that year. 1934 was certainly an excellent year in Rioja and for the 1934 Viña Real Gran Reserva, which was not bottled until April 1945. This world-class wine spent the Spanish Civil War and World War II in barrel. That year, the World Cup was held in Italy and Italy defeated Czechoslovakia 2–1 in the final. Those of you that have traveled through the UK might be interested to know that Percy Shaw patented the "cat's eye" reflective road-safety device in Britain in 1934. A remarkable invention! And last, but not least, France and Spain saw two of their most famous scientists die, Marie Curie (who had been born in 1867), and Santiago Ramón y Cajal (born 1852), Spanish winner of the Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine. They surely didn't dream of a bottle of wine harvested that year would be drunk in Madrid sometime in 2015, 80 years later! The wine seems like a venerable old wine, but it revealed itself to be a tremendous bottle with minty notes, earth, truffles, and a palate that is really complete with pungent flavors, intense and alive, following the steps (or preceding the steps I should say) of the 1938. Awesome. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2018.
