The 2014 Riesling Pellingen 1ÖTW is intense and full-bodied on the palate, provided with a good acidity, but is still slightly phenolic and drying in the finish; it is difficult to score, due to its youth. Needs time.

Honeysuckle and iris perfume soar against a background of juicy apple and honeydew melon. Fresh lime and apple, strongly marked by zest and rind, inform a finish of mouth-shaking intensity and some phenolic rusticity. Roughly two-thirds of this gained structure and satisfyingly woody nuances from cask, but an impromptu blend with the same must but raised in tank had happily proved finer when sampled in late spring than did either of its parts. (Neither lot underwent malolactic conversion.) The post-bottling sample that reached me in September was a bit reduced and exhibited some volatility. I strongly suspect that the former characteristic was temporary and the latter unrepresentative. Unfortunately, I have not yet had chance to taste the bottled wine for a second time.
