Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Aux Charmes from Virgile Lignier has a fragrant, perfumed and much more nuanced nose than its peers, more red fruit than black, more transparent, the terroir very expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannin. There is more weight and structure here than the nose suggests, gently but insistently gripping the mouth with bitter cherry and a touch of dried blood on the finish. This is a very well crafted wine with complexity and character. Bon vin!

Fragrant, wood spice and cinnamon with red cherry fruit. Soft, supple structure. Good perfume on the finish. (RH)

(50% vendange entier): Bright medium red. Complex aromas of cherry, raspberry, strawberry and musky underbrush. Silky-sweet and pliant, with a saline element to the red fruit flavors. A tad diffuse but offers an attractive combination of red fruits, soil tones and minerality. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and very good length. A nice expression of alluvial soil.

The 2012 Morey Saint Denis Aux Charmes is wonderfully lifted and perfumed in the glass. Sweet tobacco, crushed flowers, red berries and saline notes flow effortlessly through to the chiseled finish. The 2012 is mid-weight, precise and nicely layered in the glass.
