Score 94/100 · Drink 2025-2045, Jeb Dunnuck, Nov 2025

Deeper ruby-hued and semi-opaque, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape reveals ultra-classic aromatics of ripe black cherries, peppered meats, garrigue, lavender, and sandalwood nuances. Based on 75% Grenache, 10% each Syrah and Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault, it was partially destemmed, vinified in concrete tanks, and aged 12 months in large foudre. It's medium-bodied and has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This plays in the more charming, forward style of the vintage yet has everything in the right place, with flawless balance, and it’s just loaded with charm and character. Drink 2025-2045. Run by Claire and François Michel, Le Vieux Donjon is one of the most consistently excellent estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as a personal favorite, producing a single classic cuvée that's always a benchmark for the appellation. The red (they also produce a white, but it's not reviewed here) is based on 75% Grenache, 10% each Syrah and Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault, partially destemmed, vinified in concrete tanks, and aged 12 months in large foudre. These are beautifully classic, Provençal Châteauneuf-du-Papes that emphasize purity, elegance, and complexity over power while at the same time bringing incredible depth of character.

Raspberry jam, forest strawberry, licorice and crushed violets introduce the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an open-knit, juicy red Châteauneuf that’s neatly wrapped around polished tannins. Garrigue notes add even more complexity. Approachable and expressive, the full-bodied 2023 is an instant classic that Vieux Donjon followers can’t afford to miss.

An attractive, layered, velvety and poised Chateauneuf-du-Pape with aromas of cherries, strawberries, dried herbs, tar and baking spices. It\'s full-bodied with fine tannins. Succulent and well composed. There’s elegance here, yet it has character and structure. It\'s in control, seductive and flavorful with a long finish. Drink or hold.

Clairette and Roussanne. Pungent aromas of ripe pears and nectarines. Low acid and quite oily on the palate. It's a bit unbalanced and not for those seeking refreshment. (JRL)
