This has the feel of a red wine with layers of fruit and phenolics that give it tannin tension. Full-bodied with dried apples and lemons with stone and mineral highlights. Drink or hold.

The 2018 Beaune Grèves le Clos Blanc 1er Cru has more detail and terroir expression than the Beaune Bressandes, displaying more breeding and complexity. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity that cuts through the passion fruit, lemon zest and pineapple notes. A dab of lemongrass emerges toward the persistent finish. Excellent.

The 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Le Clos Blanc (Domaine Gagey) was a little less put together when I tasted it than the elegant Bressandes, its pretty bouquet of pear, peach, white flowers and almonds giving way to a medium to full-bodied, succulent but open-knit palate that will likely come together with further élevage.

Les Grèves is the largest cru in Beaune at 34 hectares. André Gagey acquired just under a hectare of this vineyard in the 1980s. Pineapple and fleshy pears on the nose. Thick, rich and warming on the palate with opulent stone fruits and sweet smoke. Peppery, heady and nutty through to the finish. (TP)
