Score 91/100 · Drink 2014-2020, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Feb 2015

A blend of 50% Grenache, 31% Syrah and the rest Mourvèdre, Cinsault and other permitted varieties, La Nerthe’s 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape is a rock-solid effort that still has a youthful ruby color to go with classic black raspberry, toasted spice, licorice and hints of graphite. Brought up in a combination of smaller barrels and larger foudre, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a great mid-palate, ripe tannin and terrific length. It’s a classic wine from this first-rate estate that’s drinking nicely now, but will hold and evolve nicely through 2020.

50% Grenache, 31% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault, 2% other varieties. 12 months ageing, 42% in barrels, 58% in foudres and wooden vats. 199,000 bottles produced. pH 3.64, RS 2 g/l. Harvested 29 August to 22 September. Dark blackish ruby. Gentle, evolved nose. But pretty light in terms of intensity. Friendly but a tad timid. And the tannins are a little scrawny. (JR)

Possessing a smoky, earthy nose, the 2005 Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape also has rich dark fruit (blackberry and cassis), spice and subtle leather notes that lead into a medium bodied, pure, precise palate. The mid-palate fills in with air and this has an edgy, structured personality with rich fruit and lots of ripe, fine grained tannins on the finish. Give this 3 to 5 years in the cellar and then drink over the following 10 to 12 years.
