Tasting notes
A blend of 65% Grenache, 22% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 3% other authorized varieties, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape gives up aromas of asphalt, black olives and blackberries—it's savory and meaty but also exhibits hints of blueberries and pie spice. It's full-bodied, concentrated, rich and velvety in texture, with a long finish. This may be the best Cuvee du Vatican I've ever tasted.

Classic ripe cherry and blackberry fruits as well as peppery herbs and leather emerge from the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Du Vatican, a ripe, medium to full-bodied, fruit-loaded, impeccably balanced 2020 that's ideal for drinking any time over the coming 7-8 years, if not longer. The blend is 65% Grenache, 22% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre and other permitted varieties, aged in a mix of foudre, old barrels, and concrete.
65% Grenache, 22% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 3% others. Aged in concrete (55%), foudres (30%) and old barrels. Tank sample. Rich, intense and spicy. Clearly has a depth of fruit and aromatic complexity. Seems like old-vine concentration? Tannins powerful but refined and well integrated. Firm, long finish. Needs time but clear potential. (JL)
