Bright medium red. A ripe aroma of cherry liqueur is lifted by spice and mint high notes and complicated by menthol and licorice. Shows good texture for the vintage but today the strong licorice element dominates the wine's fruit. Finishes quite peppery, with slightly tough tannins. Not particularly approachable for a wine from clay-based soil. The crop level was down 30% due to hail and a bad flowering.

Bright medium red. Cool aromas of black cherry, licorice, mint and wild herbs are energized and lifted by a violet topnote. A step up in density from the Sizies, showing more sappy intensity to its fruit-driven flavors of black raspberry and black cherry. Still conveys a cool-vintage character but there's more stuffing and structure here. Finishes with slightly peppery tannins. A good showing.

The 2013 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru has a broody, more tertiary bouquet compared to the les Sizies 2013, with a light leafy element coming through. The palate is clean and fresh with angular tannins, lean but fresh with a tapered cranberry and strawberry finish that has commendable backbone if not the persistence or peacock’s tail of flavor. This has more substance than the Les Sizies '13, although I have tasted better vintages in the past.

No whole bunch, 25% new oak. Deep crimson. A little muted and chewy cherry. Firm and fine. Good undertow. Mid weight. (JR)
