Tasting notes
The 2020 Volnay Champans 1er Cru has a warm and slightly alcoholic nose that blurs the edges of this wine. But there are attractive fruits, such as black plum, mulberry and light earthy tones. Peppermint emerges with time. The palate is actually a little fresher than the nose suggests, with black rather than red fruit. It's granular in texture and salty towards a finish that feels just a little short and hot. On this occasion, the Clos de la Rougeotte shows far better. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

This youthful Volnay is already fully there in the nose, in a fragrant way that will delight Volnay fans. Lovely sour-cherry and violet aromas! Very satisfying balance of frank fruit and crisp tannins that move this briskly across the palate. Long finish thatâs simultaneously earthy and fresh. Drink or hold.
This too possesses and exceptionally fresh nose of red and dark pinot fruit, lavender, violet and a whiff of exotic tea. Once again, the medium-bodied flavors possess a highly sophisticated and beguiling texture while the youthfully austere and moderately structured finale exhibits fine balance as well as sneaky good length. Worth considering.
