(aged for a year in oak barrels, "maybe 5% to 10% of them new," according to Ogier): Deep ruby. Fresh black raspberry, blueberry, smoky bacon and pungent flowers on the fragrant nose and palate. Juicy and sharply focused, with very good focus and spicy lift. Closes smoky and quite long, showing subtle tannins, lingering spiciness and a touch of candied violet.

Bottled in March, the 2013 La Rosine Syrah VDP shows the cooler nature of the vintage with its pretty bouquet of white pepper, cedar, dried violets and more raspberry-scented fruits. Elegant, medium-bodied, with bright acidity and fine tannin, it's a solid Syrah that will drink nicely for 5-6 years.
