The 2021 Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard is another aromatically focused, mineral-laced showing from The Hilt, supported by a backdrop of preserved citrus and subtle, creamy generosity. The palate is more generous than the nose would let on, with impressive attack and blazing mineral intensity. It finishes with a wonderfully ethereal, floating and radiant richness that is such a signature of this site. This is a beautiful example of polished, finessed intensity.

The 2021 Chardonnay Bentrock opens with striking, expansive aromatics. There's a bit more new oak here, and that also comes through. Orchard fruit, mint, white flowers, white pepper and pear all open with some coaxing. I especially admire the wine's inner sweetness. All the 2021 needs is a bit of time to emerge.

Aged 40% in new French oak barrels, 60% in once- and twice-used barrels for 11 months, followed by five months in stainless-steel tank on full lees. Delicate green pear and apples. The lovely fruit character is pure and pristine yet  driven by a lovely grip and directional acidity. A delicate hint of spices makes it extra-appealing and savoury. It is delightful by itself but would be versatile with food. (FG)
