Tasting notes
The 2020 Beaune Clos du Roi 1er Cru has an exotic nose with kirsch and marmalade notes. There's something quite Tuscan about these aromatics. They are attractive, though the summer warmth dictates the scents. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe red cherry and raspberry fruit, a generous dash of black pepper, overt spices and a quite tannic finish. Give this another year in bottle—it is one of the better Beaune Premier Crus, albeit in line with my rather tepid reaction from barrel. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Cask sample. Refined, classy example of Beaune premier cru. Fine combination of richness, ripe tannin, good acid. A Beaune premier cru with no harsh edges. (AWH)
The 2020 Beaune Clos de Roi 1er Cru is overtly floral on the nose with attractive scents of wilted rose petal and peony percolating through the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, quite spicy, maybe just a touch of greenness on the back palate here. Fresh, but I find more cohesion and harmony on the Savigny-lès-Beaune at the moment.
