Score 90/100 · Drink 2024-2034, Jeb Dunnuck, Oct 2024

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape shows the ripe, sun-kissed style of the vintage and has a beautiful array of kirsch liqueur, sweet strawberries, peppery garrigue and sweet flowers. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Châteauneuf du Pape with a round, layered, elegant mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and outstanding length. Based on 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Vaccarèse, it will evolve nicely over the coming decade. Due to the devastating storm before the 2022 harvest that decimated large portions of the La Crau lieu-dit, production for both the Combes de Fous and Deus-Ex Machina are down by 50%. In addition, the production on the estate’s Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is down dramatically as well. Aside from that, this estate is still firing on all cylinders, and both their 2022s and 2023s are everything you would expect from this talented team.

The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is magnificent, bursting from the glass with prominent licorice, ripe red fruits, rosewater and garrigue . Totally alluring yet super-serious, the distinct 2022 is a full-throttle Clos Saint-Jean, packing elevated flavor concentration without going overboard. A floral orange blossom lift accompanies the long and complex finish. Outstanding.

The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is quite reductive in this showing. Time in the glass unlocks strawberry compote, black cherry, licorice, violet and orange rind aromas. The palate, on the other hand, is game-on. Concentrated, perfectly balanced by fresh acidity and wrapped in polished tannins, the opulent 2022 closes with a distinctively savory finale. I can’t wait to taste the finished wine.
