Score 88/100 · Drink 2018-2020, Neal Martin, Mar 2019

The 2002 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru clearly has more charm on the nose compared to the previous vintage, offering rustic, almost ferrous scents of redcurrant and cranberry, hints of pressed flowers in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a grippy entry, edgy tannin, a little dryness towards the finish but there is more presence and weight than the 2001. It would definitely show much better on the dinner table and it will not improve further, so feel free to uncork any bottles in the near future. Tasted at Flint Wines’ Taupenot-Merme retrospective.
