Showing more precision than the 2020, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Les Vieilles Roussanne displays well-defined aromas of honeysuckle, dried lemon peel, pastry, almond, vanilla and freshly-cut fennel. Full-bodied and perfectly balanced by lively acidity, it wraps up with a resonating finish and should drink well over the next eight years.
Readers looking for a richer, more concentrated style of white should snatch up the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Vieilles Roussanne, a 100% Roussanne from the older vines on the estate. Its medium gold hue is followed by a terrific perfume of buttered orchard fruits, spice, mint, and chalky minerality. Balanced on the palate, it's medium-bodied, has a round, elegant mouthfeel, and a great finish.
100% Roussanne. Vinified and then matured for nine months in new barriques (50%) and old barriques (50%). Tasted blind. Cream and custard nose, rich and with a lot of dominant oak on the mid palate. Weighty, with good concentration of fruit and a ripe stone-fruit finish. Very rich, but there is enough fruit to absorb the oak. (AC)
