Drink 0-0, Neal Martin, Nov 2023
The 2018 V blends 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot matured in 100% new French oak. I'm afraid this lacks freshness on the nose, and the fruit seems suppressed by Brettanomyces. The palate feels raw and tannic because Brett eviscerates the fruit, leaving the finish hard and dry.

The 2018 Vergelegen V 1700 is quite opulent on the nose with red berry fruit, marmalade, allspice and smoke. This blossoms with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, grippy tannins, layers of black tarry fruit and a touch of mint emerging with time. Gentle grip, fine structure towards the finish that will need a couple more years to loosen up.
