Tasting notes
Expressive and spicy in the glass, the 2018 Clonal Selection Elgin Syrah pops with notions of black peppercorn with spiced plum and black cherry essence. Medium-bodied and with a fresh and ripe palate, flavors of black raspberry and red peppercorn sway with succulent bright red fruit flavors and a gorgeous potpourri essence. As the Syrah sits on the palate, it expresses a fine rocky minerality, firming up with succulent tannins before ending with a brilliant, oaky finish. Just under 5,800 bottles were produced after the wine rested in 45% new French oak barrels.

The 2018 Syrah Clonal Selection Elgin is quite closed on the nose and needs a bit of coaxing to offer up its blackberry, briar, wild strawberry, clove and light gamy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with silky-smooth tannins and pure red fruit (strawberry and red cherries), leading to a harmonious, black-pepper-infused finish. This is one of Kershaw's most sensual bottlings.
Full bottle 1,375 g. This is usually a year behind the current Pinot Noir and Chardonnay releases. Mid garnet. Both rich and savoury on the nose. Quite a tightrope walked with aplomb! Really complete. Long and polished with some transparency. It's fuller than a Côte Rôtie but much more elegant than most New World Syrahs. This throbs on the palate! Really neat and well balanced with a dry finish but no shortage of refined fruit. Really bright-fruited and its own style. Silky texture. Well done! (JR)
