Score 89/100 · Drink 2015-2025, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Nov 2014

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Morey St Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 2011 has plenty of vibrant red fruit on the nose, although at the moment it is masked by the oak. However the two seem to be in balance and I can see them melding together with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft, rounded entry, fine depth with a conservative but focused, perhaps rather foursquare finish. Give this Morey Saint Denis another 1-2 years to develop more personality.

Bright, dark red. Complex aromas and flavors of liqueur-like black cherry, raspberry, mocha and spices. Large-scaled, rich and sweet, combining impressive volume for the vintage with a vibrancy that's no doubt partly due to fermentation with a portion of the stems. Slightly herbal in a positive way, conveying an impression of strong extract and precision. The fresh fruit intensity carries through on the long finish, which features fine-grained tannins.

Dark crimson. Rich and ripe on the nose. A slightly mousy note overlays it, oddly. But there is no shortage of flavour! Very sweet and almost soft. Clean finish. (JR)

(vinified with one-third whole clusters; the foregoing wines were made with entirely destemmed fruit): Bright, full medium. Captivating aromas of raspberry, minerals, mocha, crushed stone and flowers, along with a hint of smoked meat. Ripe, fruity and intense, with a sappy character to its flavors of red fruits and sweet spices. Finishes perfumed and long. Classic, classy Morey wine.
