Tasting notes
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape F601 is an unusual cuvée made of 100% Cinsault planted in 1928. There’s a kind of meaty nose with floral aromas and dark red fruit surrounded by elegant spice. The full-bodied palate is rich with good grip, round tannins, and loads of energy with pomegranate, raspberry and dark plum. This is very unique, with a lot more spice on the mid-palate. Surprisingly, the finish isn’t heavy or hot, but very delicate and crystalline, with more minerality coming through, with the raspberry notes staying in the month for a good minute; truly impressive. Cellar it for five or six years before enjoying.

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape F601 is a slightly darker, richer example of the cuvée, and this might be the finest vintage to date. Darker cherries, peppery garrigue, spice, and forest floor-like nuances all define this incredibly seamless, pure, medium to full-bodied Châteauneuf du Pape. As always, it's all Cinsault from the Les Serres lieu-dit (pebbly soils) that was not destemmed and was brought up all in terracotta jars. It's already impossible to resist, yet I suspect it will have an interesting evolution over the coming 10-15 years.
The 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape F601, a 100% Cinsault derived from vines planted in 1928 in lieu-dit Les Serres on galets roulés, quartz, blue clay and sand, reveals a delicate, lively bouquet of peony, lavender, bay leaf, mint, flowers, red berries and spices. Medium-bodied, layered and rich for a Cinsault, it's built around lively acids and refined tannins, concluding with a saline, perfumed and ethereal finish. Matured for 24 months in terracotta jars, it's one of the best renditions of Cinsault in France.
Totaling only 800 bottles, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape F601 is an eccentric single-varietal Cinsault from vines planted in 1928. It opens with a hauntingly fragrant perfume of bay leaf, lavender, rose petal, fresh violets, wild cherries and spicy undertones. Hitting the palate with seamless elegance and mind-boggling intensity, the 2022 F601 is a must-have for deep-packeted collectors with a love for precious Southam Rhône jewels.
