Drink 2028-2050, FINE+RARE, Nov 2023

This tiny 0.2-hectare strip of vineyard in the southeastern corner of Chevalier-Montrachet was historically part of Montrachet, but it was fallow for a formal classification and therefore was put under Chevalier-Montrachet. Replanted in 1950, Bouchard keeps the fruit from this plot separate and makes a tiny amount of wine – a generous four barrels in 2022. It is very fine, a wine of extreme minerality that shows a real step up from the “straight” Chevalier bottling, which is already a fantastic wine. The wine has such freshness, with a pleasing, pithy, phenolic grip and bitterness. While the Chevalier rolls over the palate, this drives straight and true. The finish is moreish, scented with sugared almonds.

Cask sample. Riper than the straight Chevalier-Montrachet, intense citrus and a hint of apricot. Deeply fruited, gently chewy, firm but fresh. Spicy, long, mouth-watering finish. (JH)

If this year's regular Chevalier could be mistaken for La Cabotte in a blind tasting, so the 2022 Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte Grand Cru might be mistaken for a Montrachet. Offering up youthfully reductive aromas of pear and peach mingled with hazelnuts, white flowers and orange oil, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with broad structural shoulders and an unctuous core of fruit, concluding with a long, saline finish.
