Score 91/100 · Drink 2002-2014, Robert Parker, Oct 2000

The 1998 Gigondas Les Hauts de Montmirail boasts a saturated purple color in addition to excellent depth, toasty new oak, and exotic spices intermixed with black raspberries, minerals, kirsch liqueur, and blackberries. Intense and moderately tannic, this 1998 requires 2-3 years of cellaring; it should keep for 12-14 years. Importer: New Castle Imports, Myrtle Beach, SC; tel. (843) 497-8625

Saturated full ruby-purple. Brilliant aromas of cassis, black raspberry, bitter chocolate, minerals, licorice and spicy oak. Superripe and extremely dense, yet almost magically fresh and delineated thanks to firm acidity and pungent underlying minerality. Possesses a deep core of spice that goes beyond mere oak. Finishes with substantial but even tannins, dark chocolate and a strong new oak component. Very impressive.
