Tasting notes
Rich and dramatic, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans unwinds in the glass with aromas of berry conserve, dark chocolate, sweet spices and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, rich and muscular, it's powerful and layered, with what seems to be a somewhat roasted profile that's reminiscent of the 1990 vintage.

The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru offers attractive black fruit mixed with briary, crushed rock and sea cave aromas on the nose that is all quite captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, good depth and grip with a saline finish that gets the saliva flowing. Classy, old school Volnay.
The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru comes from 1.07 hectares of vine, the oldest planted in 1934. This has quite a heady, opulent bouquet, more so than the Les Fremiets, touches of kirsch emerging with aeration. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry with powdery tannins and modest weight in the mouth. It needs to develop a little more terroir character and precision on the finish. Not bad, but I preferred the 2016 and 2017 by comparison.
