The 2022 Ried Zwerithaler Kammergut Grüner Veltliner Smaragd shows a clear, bright, fresh and elegant, slightly smoky nose of light fruit. It's juicy, spicy and salty on the taut, tightly meshed palate, yet it's very delicate. There is ripe, even overripe fruit on the finish, yet it's quite stimulating and slightly astringent. Tasted at Schloss Dürnstein, Wachau, in September 2023.

Weissenkirchen. Terraced vineyard at 207–269 m, south-facing. The parent material consists of hillside debris with alternating layers of dark material and light calcareous material. Noticeably ripe fruits, greengage and green fig but also the classic ripe, peppery pear of Grüner Veltliner here, veering towards creamy spice. Full-bodied, rounded yet beautifully fresh and precise on the long finish. Mouth-watering aftertaste lingers long. (JH)
