The 2022 Ried Achleiten Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Stockkultur offers an elegant, spicy, concentrated and complex nose. Powerful, dense and elegant on the palate, it has a firm and gripping finish, but it's (still) rather brittle in the aftertaste. The wine is salty and distinctive but does not yet hint at the class of recent years and seems somewhat haggard today. Tasted at Schloss Dürnstein, Wachau, in September 2023.

Weissenkirchen. Just 27 m from the Danube, terraced with slopes of 41–83%, facing west and south-east, stretching up from the river all the way to the forest. Extremely complex and diverse range of soils. Stockkultur refers to individually staked vines, usually densely planted. Creamy pears and citrus, very pure impression of fruit. A touch of spice on the palate. Elegant and persistent – a beautifully balanced wine in the context of this vintage. (JH)
