Aromas of cherries and berries mingle with notions of sweet spices and potpourri in the 2020 Morgon Côte du Py Cuvée Passerelle 577, a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered wine that's taut and vibrant, with a deep core of fruit and powdery structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish. As readers will remember, it derives from an enclave within Godard's Côte du Py holdings.

Full bottle 1,297 g. Cigar and cherry tobacco on a quiet,  shibui  nose. Like so many of the Godard wines, intensely powerful with an earthbound, deep-rooted connectedness; but also with something more ethereal. Her wines have wings. Black-feathered, glossy, iridescent, whispering, ink-scribbled. This one: a soaring, valkyrie, sword-raised-to-sky firmament. It feels/tastes/smells like a summer night, when the stars are pinned to darkness so close that you can almost reach out your hand; when the scent of night is dense, and it's the smell of the magic of life: leaves and roots and mushrooms and petals; like the whole breathing vault of the earth when us humans aren't looking. Super-intense violet and elderberry aromas with a touch of bitter chocolate are married to a serious tannin structure and racy acidity for this warm vintage. Quite some tension here, which will need some bottle age to completely resolve. A touch of pomegranate at the succulent and vibrant finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.
