The Luciano Sandrone 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore Sibi et Pauci comes roaring out of the gate with bold intensity, dark fruit, dried cherry and baked plum. This hot-vintage Nebbiolo offers pretty fullness in terms of aromas and flavors, but the wine proves thinner on the mid-palate. It is fully loaded up front but less so on the back end.

The 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore Sibi et Paucis is just starting to open in its aromatics, but there's still quite a bit of tannin. In its youth, the 2017 was more forthcoming, today, it is quite reticent. There's lovely purity to the fruit. Hints to blood orange, sweet red fruit, cinnamon, incense and pipe tobacco add the closing shades of nuance.

Lustrous ruby. Saline, minerally notes with just a suggestion of savoury oak. Supple and with lots of juice and crunch on the finish. You’d never guess this is five years old and from a hot vintage. Hedonistic and animating. (WS)

Transparent ruby. Meaty nose with slightly simple fruit and some marked acidity. But overall a tad dull unfortunately. No spark. I couldn't imagine being happy to pay the price for this, I'm afraid. (JR)
